Pharmaceutical packaging demands materials that maintain sterility and product integrity from manufacture through use. Flexible sterile packaging, from pre-filled blister cards to barrier film pouches, must withstand sterilization (gamma, EtO, steam) and repeated handling without compromising seals or materials. SIWO US’s SiwoPUD-SWC is a waterborne aliphatic polyurethane dispersion engineered to meet these challenges. It forms clear, tough coatings and adhesives free of toxic solvents, heavy metals, and organotin catalysts. This ensures high chemical purity compliant with pharmacopeial standards, minimizing odor or leachables that could affect medicinal products. In short, SiwoPUD-SWC combines pharma-grade safety with the durability and heat-seal performance needed for sterile packaging applications.

SiwoPUD-SWC serves as a high-performance adhesive binder in sterile package lamination. In multilayer pouches or Tyvek®/aluminum blister pouches, ultra-thin coatings (on the order of 1–10 µm) can bond plastic films to board or foil with excellent adhesion. Its high purity meets pharmaceutical standards, properly formulated PUDs are compliant with USP and FDA requirements and do not impart odors or contaminants to drug products. After sterilization, a SiwoPUD-SWC binder maintains tack and seal strength, ensuring packages remain securely closed until use.
As a blister sealant, SiwoPUD-SWC creates the adhesive layer between thermoformed plastic “blister” shells (PETG, PVC, APET, etc.) and paperboard or foil backing. Waterborne polyurethane heat-seal coatings are industry-standard for blister cards because they deliver high peel strength and cohesive failure (clean fiber-tear), even on high-speed lines. The cured film is clear, flexible and non-yellowing, so printed graphics on the backing remain legible. Crucially, SiwoPUD-SWC withstands the temperature and pressure of in-line sealing without boil-off or wrinkling, yielding consistently secure seals for tablets and medical devices.
SiwoPUD-SWC is also used to produce or coat medical-grade films and lidding materials (e.g. peelable foil lidding, Tyvek lid stock). Thin layers of this PUD impart enhanced strength and puncture resistance to flexible films, while maintaining biocompatibility. Its excellent hydrolytic and chemical stability (from the polycarbonate soft segments) means films retain performance even in humid or moist environments. The cured polyurethane is essentially inert, preventing migration of oils or plasticizers into pharmaceuticals, and remains intact during storage. This combination of flexibility, clarity and barrier protection makes SiwoPUD-SWC suitable for films used in sterile medical kits, diagnostic test pouches, and other critical healthcare applications.

SiwoPUD-SWC’s waterborne chemistry offers significant environmental and safety benefits. With virtually no volatile solvents, coatings cure by water evaporation alone. This drastically cuts emissions of VOCs and hazardous air pollutants, improving air quality in the workplace and meeting stringent regulatory VOC limits. In practical terms, production areas no longer require extensive solvent handling or flame safety controls. Furthermore, SiwoPUD-SWC avoids phthalates, heavy metals and amine solvents entirely, future-proofing formulations against evolving REACH/US EPA regulations. The product’s low-odor, bio-inert nature also facilitates recycling and compliant disposal of coated packaging. In sum, SiwoPUD-SWC not only meets pharmaceutical standards, it also supports your sustainability goals as an eco-friendly, worker-safe material.
