Understanding the Ionic Waterborne Polyurethanes
Water-based polyurethanes are becoming a sizeable segment of the industry due to their high tensile strength, low-temperature flexibility, and high elongation. It’s also resistant to alkali and mar but ranks higher in resistance to abrasion, chemical, UV, water, and impact. But, most importantly, it’s environmentally friendly as it accounts for low odor and lower VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) emissions.
To synthesize water-based polyurethane, different forms of internal emulsified may be deployed — namely, ionic and nonionic. Ionic further subcategorized into cationic and anionic polyurethane.
Cationic Waterborne Polyurethanes
Tertiary amines are consumed for the making of salts in the case of cationic emulsifiers. This group ensures that the water-based polyurethane emulsifies itself on the main chain of CWPU (Cationic Waterborne Polyurethane). Because CWPU features good hydrophilicity, it establishes on the chain as a positive charge — this allows for a good film formation, exceptionally strong stability, and low solid content. The properties and structure of cationic waterborne polyurethane allow for it to be a good substitute for adhesives. Anionic Waterborne Polyurethanes
The anionic emulsifier reacts with either sulfonated acids or carboxylic in the polyurethane chain towards its hydrophobic side that contains high amounts of solid content. This form of a substrate makes for a smooth, soft texture that remains anti-corrosive due to the presence of an anionic chain. It also gives products of polyurethane dispersions their mechanical, optical, static, and thermal stability properties. As for the hydrophobic properties of anionic waterborne polyurethane, they make for the perfect binding components for construction maters, leather, adhesives, and coating.
